Hiring

What should I look for when hiring a bookkeeping firm?

Short answer

Look for experience in your country and industry, certification in your accounting software, fixed monthly pricing, a clear month-end deadline, references, and documented data-security practices.

Detailed answer

Check evidence, not promises

Ask how the firm closes a month, reviews work and handles mistakes. Request an example of an anonymised reporting pack and discuss an issue common in your industry, such as marketplace payouts or project deposits. Software badges can show product familiarity, but they do not replace relevant accounting experience or local professional registration.

Review the engagement terms

Confirm scope, fees, deadlines, confidentiality, data ownership and any professional insurance. Ask who will actually work on your file and who covers absences. References should come from comparable businesses where possible. A good provider should explain what it cannot do as clearly as what it can do.

Country differences: rules, thresholds and terminology differ between the US, UK, Australia and Canada. Check the official source for your country below.
