What is included in monthly bookkeeping services?
Short answer
Monthly bookkeeping normally includes transaction categorisation, bank and credit-card reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable tracking, a month-end close and monthly financial statements.
- Profit & loss and balance sheet each month
- Reconciled bank, card and loan accounts
- Optional: payroll, sales tax/VAT/GST prep, management reports
Detailed answer
Define the monthly deliverables
A complete monthly service should leave you with reconciled accounts and reports you can trust, rather than simply a bank feed with categories applied. It should review unpaid invoices and bills, unusual balances, transfers and any missing documents. Inventory, fixed assets, accruals and tax control accounts may need additional work depending on the business.
Agree a close timetable
Set a date for providing documents and a date for receiving the reports. Ask for a list of unresolved items and an explanation of significant changes in profit or cash. Confirm separately whether payments, debt collection, payroll filings and year-end tax returns are included; they are not automatically part of bookkeeping.
