Is it safe to give a bookkeeper access to my bank account?

Short answer

Bookkeepers don't need your bank login. Use authorised bank feeds and named software accounts with suitable permissions. Check access rights and keep payment approvals under your control.

Detailed answer

Use separate, limited access

A bookkeeper normally works through accounting software and bank feeds, not your personal online-banking credentials. Some banks offer delegated read-only access for downloading statements. Check the permissions carefully: an accounting-software account may also allow bill processing or payment-related integrations if you grant broader access.

Protect payment approvals

Keep money movement under your control unless there is a separately agreed and controlled payment service. Use multi-factor authentication, individual accounts and a second approval for important payments. Review the access list regularly and remove access promptly when staff or providers leave. Never share a banking password or a one-time security code.
