When do I need to register for VAT in the UK?
Short answer
You must register when your VAT-taxable turnover exceeds the threshold (£90,000 over a rolling 12 months) or you expect to exceed it in the next 30 days. You can also register voluntarily.
Detailed answer
Apply both registration tests
The rolling-turnover test looks at VAT-taxable turnover over the previous 12 months, not your accounting year or profit. There is also a separate test where you expect to exceed the threshold in the next 30-day period alone. Exempt sales, overseas activity and non-established businesses may require different analysis.
Monitor turnover every month
Keep a rolling calculation and evidence of when you crossed the threshold. Check the official notification and effective-registration-date rules promptly rather than waiting until year-end. Voluntary registration can help recover eligible input VAT but also creates invoicing, record-keeping and filing obligations; review the effect on customers and margins with your adviser.
