How do payroll remittances work in Canada?
Short answer
Employers deduct CPP, EI and income tax from wages and remit them to the CRA, usually monthly for small employers. T4 slips are filed by the end of February.
Detailed answer
Your remitter category matters
The CRA assigns remittance schedules based on rules such as average monthly withholding and compliance history. New, regular, quarterly and accelerated remitters can have different deadlines; monthly remittance is not universal. Employer contributions are separate from employee deductions and also need to be included correctly.
Reconcile and retain evidence
Check the payroll register against amounts posted to the ledger and paid to the CRA. Keep submission and payment confirmations and review discrepancies promptly. Prepare information slips and summaries using current deadlines and rules, and account separately for provincial obligations such as Quebec payroll where applicable.
