Can I reclaim VAT on every business purchase?

Short answer

No. Input VAT recovery depends on registration, the business use, valid evidence and restrictions. Exempt activity, private use and some spending categories can limit recovery even where a cost is business-related.

Detailed answer

Check the invoice and supply

Confirm that VAT was correctly charged and that you hold the evidence HMRC requires. An ordinary receipt or bank statement may not be a valid VAT invoice. Some purchases involve reverse-charge rules or other adjustments, and suppliers who are not VAT-registered cannot simply provide recoverable VAT by labelling a charge as tax.

Review mixed and exempt use

Allocate private-use costs appropriately and seek advice where the business makes exempt as well as taxable supplies. Partial exemption, vehicles and certain entertainment costs need particular attention. Keep a clear calculation and review unusual items before submitting the return. The fact that an expense is deductible for income tax does not establish that its VAT is recoverable.
